Pedestrians are reminded to be alert and cautious around Melbourne’s tram network after a 35 per cent spike in near misses between people and trams around the city, compared with last year.Public Transport Victoria has launched its Look Both Ways campaign to highlight the need for pedestrians to ensure they keep themselves safe when walking near trams, crossing tracks and waiting at stops.Footage has been released showing a number of near-miss incidents, often involving pedestrians being distracted by their phones and failing to check for oncoming trams. A total of 225 near-misses have been recorded this year, as well as 45 incidents in which a pedestrian was struck.Trams weigh up to 62 tonnes and have a minimum stopping distance of 13 metres when travelling at 30km/h, making it difficult for our drivers to stop a tram to avoid a collision. Sudden stopping can also cause tram passengers to lose balance and fall, potentially causing serious injuries.Pedestrians are reminded to:>Put devices away and avoid other distractions when crossing>Only use marked crossings and intersections when walking over tracks>Look both ways before crossing, and>Don’t assume it’s safe to cross just because a tram has passed.
