Prison staff had to "clean up the blood of their colleagues" following an attack allegedly involving one of the Manchester Arena bomb plotters.

Evil Hashem Abedi, 28, is believed to have stabbed three prison officers at HMP Frankland in County Durham and thrown hot oil over them, resulting in "life-threatening injuries". The attack is said to have happened on Saturday (April 12) and taken place in a 'prison within a prison' designed to segregate extremists.

The officers, two men and one woman, were rushed to hospital after the incident that is thought to have involved boiling 'butter or margarine' and a 'makeshift weapon'. Abedi was found guilty of murdering 22 innocent people during a Ariana Grande concert at Manchester Arena in 2017 and is serving at least 55 years behind bars.

His twisted brother Salman Abedi died in the suicide bombing, the first in the UK since he July 7 London bombings in 2005. Following yesterday's vicious attack, calls are being made for the introduction of stab-proof vests ‘as a minimum’ for prison officers.

In a statement, the union said: "The officers received life-threatening injuries including burns, scalds and stab wounds when Abedi threw hot cooking oil over them then produced homemade weapons and proceeded to stab the officers." An investigation by counter-terrorism police has been launched into the incident, with Abedi thought to be involved.

The Prison Officers' Association said that the officers sustained injuries that included burns, scalds and stab wounds. This isn't the first time that Adebi has been connected with a prison attack.

In 2022, he was found guilty, along with two others, on two prison officers at Belmarsh Prison in London. The female officer involved in this weekend's attack was discharged by 4pm on Saturday.

However, Mark Fairhurst, national chairman of the Prison Officers' Association, said today (April 13) that both her male colleagues suffered "severe stab wounds" and remain in hospital where their conditions have "stabilised". While Steve Gillan the General Secretary of the Prison Officers Association slammed the cowardice of the attack.

He told the Mirror: "This was a despicable and cowardly attack. Staff were attacked where they are allowed to self cook. At least two had either hot butter or hot margarine thrown over them and then started to stab them with a makeshift weapon.

"These people are ingenious and they will use anything they get their hands on. The officers were stabbed several times with a makeshift blade, weapon.

"We haven't got stab vests and that's a real issue. You see security guards in supermarkets with stab vests but prison officers don't have them.

"Prison officers are dealing with people who are clearly a danger to society and a danger to prison officers. Our thoughts are with the prison officers and their families also their colleagues who have been traumatised too."

He added that prison officers also had to clean up their own colleagues' blood after the investigation was carried out, noting that the incident was "traumatising enough". He also feared that separation units like the one in HMP Frankland could just end up giving inmates "status".

Mr Gillan went on: "There will be a lot of anger. I've got real concerns about butter or margarine allowed it the area of the separation unit used for self cooking, so they can heat it up and throw it at staff. We are calling for all those materials to be withdrawn. The officers suffered third degree burns in this attack.

"This was a cowardly attack and didn't make any sense whatsoever. But of course this individual has nothing to lose. It's absolutely shocking and despicable. Prison officers do a brilliant job on behalf of society to keep everyone safe from these types of cowardly attacks."
